Before you read the piece discuss any potential problems or tensions that could crop up among the characters. Read the piece through explaining and difficult words or phrases. Divide the class into groups of six (if your class is not a multiple of six allot double roles to stronger students). Get students who share the same character to group together. Ask them to discuss their character and try to define his/her personality as much as possible. Decide hobies and pastimes, favourite foods, music, etc. Try and make each character into as full a person as possible. When they have finished they return to their original groups. In turns they introduce themselves as the character, describing their personality likes and dislikes. Once they all 'know' each other get them to read the scene together. Encourage them to stop and decide how each line should be delivered (this may take a number of times). In turns the groups perform their scenes. top
